Welcome to Sandra Small Art*
I am an "outsider" artist who works primarily in encaustic and mixed media. I
make art because I need to--like an itch that must be scratched.
Most of my working career was spent as a psychologist and university professor.
I have found it difficult--if not impossible--to separate the psychological point
of view from what I create. In most of my work there are layers of meaning,
which, I believe, makes it more interesting and compelling for the viewer.
I am particularly attracted to encaustic because of its thick texture. Previously
I had been painting in oil with a pallette knife when an artist friend suggested
that I explore encaustic as a medium. As soon as I began
working with the wax I know that I had come "home".
I am attracted to mixed media because it allows me to
combine all of the other media that I have enjoyed and to
incorporate "junk".
The Constructions were primarily created for the SOS Art
Show for Peace and Human Rights which is held each year
in Cincinnati and is opened to artists of all ages.
